Discourse particles (przecież, raczej)

Discourse Particles

In everyday conversation, Polish speakers constantly use small words called discourse particles. These little words do not change the core grammatical meaning of a sentence, but they add flavor, express the speaker's attitude, or adjust the tone. When consulting with a tattoo artist, these particles are perfect for politely expressing your preferences, doubts, and opinions.

Właśnie (Exactly / Just)

Use właśnie when you want to emphasize that something is exactly right or precisely what you mean. You will usually place it directly before the word or phrase you are emphasizing.

Exactly this sketch appeals to me the most.
Właśnie ten szkic najbardziej mi się podoba.
Exactly this thin needle is very good.
Właśnie ta cienka igła jest bardzo dobra.

Chyba (I guess / Probably)

When you are not entirely sure about a decision, or when you want to state a preference softly without sounding demanding, use chyba. It translates smoothly to "I guess," "I think," or "probably."

I guess I will get myself a new tattoo on my shoulder.
Chyba zrobię sobie nowy tatuaż na ramieniu.
I guess I lack a thin outline here.
Chyba brakuje mi tu cienkiego konturu.

Raczej (Rather)

Raczej is incredibly useful for politely turning down an idea, expressing a leaning preference, or offering a mild disagreement. It softens critiques and is best translated as "rather."

This design is rather too thin.
Ten wzór jest raczej zbyt cienki.
The tattoo artist rather does not have time today.
Tatuator raczej nie ma dzisiaj czasu.

Przecież (Obviously / After all)

Przecież is used to point out something that should be obvious to the listener, or to gently remind someone of a known fact. Depending on your tone and the context, it can mean "obviously," "after all," or "but [as you already know]...". It can appear at the beginning of a sentence or float naturally in the middle.

You obviously lack black ink, sir.
Przecież brakuje panu czarnego tuszu.
A good tattoo artist always changes the needle, obviously.
Dobry tatuator przecież zawsze zmienia igłę.
I am getting myself a big tattoo, after all!
Przecież robię sobie duży tatuaż!
