Demonyms (nazwy mieszkańców)

Capitalization Rules for Inhabitants

Before learning the suffixes used to form demonyms (the names of inhabitants of cities and regions), there is one crucial spelling rule to remember: in Polish, the names of city and region inhabitants are always written in lowercase.

While in English you capitalize "Varsovian" or "Londoner," in Polish they are written as warszawianin and londyńczyk.

Male Inhabitants: The Suffix -anin

The most common suffix used to create a male inhabitant of a city is -anin. You attach this to the root of the city's name, which occasionally causes minor spelling changes in the stem.

  • Warszawa (Warsaw) → warszawianin
  • Kraków (Krakow) → krakowianin

Once formed, these nouns decline just like other regular masculine personal nouns.

Female Inhabitants: The Suffix -anka

To form the feminine equivalent for a female inhabitant, simply replace the masculine suffix with -anka.

  • Warszawa → warszawianka
  • Kraków → krakowianka

Contrary to appearances, the Varsovian woman and the Cracovian woman forgot about the rivalry.
Wbrew pozorom warszawianka i krakowianka zapomniały o rywalizacji.

Expressing City Pride

Demonyms are highly useful when discussing regional identities, stereotypes, and local rivalries (rywalizacja). You will often hear these terms used alongside words like duma (pride) and tożsamość (identity) to describe how locals feel about their hometowns.

The Posnanian man and the Posnanian woman feel pride in their city.
Poznanianin i poznanianka czują dumę ze swojego miasta.

International Cities and the -czyk Suffix

These word formation rules also apply to international cities. A man from Paris (Paryż) is a paryżanin.

However, some cities take an alternative masculine suffix: -czyk. For instance, a man from London (Londyn) is a londyńczyk. (The feminine equivalent for these is formed with -ka, making it londynka).

A Parisian and a Londoner rarely agree, all the more so because their views differ a lot.
Paryżanin i londyńczyk rzadko się zgadzają, tym bardziej że ich poglądy bardzo się różnią.
