The Prefix "po-": Doing Something for a While
In Polish, adding a prefix to an imperfective verb usually makes it perfective (showing a completed action). The prefix po- does something specific: it indicates that an action is performed for a short, limited amount of time. It translates roughly to "doing something for a while," "doing a bit of something," or doing something casually.
For example, czytać (to read) becomes poczytać (to read for a while), and siedzieć (to sit) becomes posiedzieć (to sit for a while).
This prefix is very common for resting or taking a break, like poleżeć (to lie down for a while) and pospać (to sleep for a while).
Casual Leisure Activities
Because po- implies a casual, non-intensive action, it is perfect for planning unstructured leisure time. For instance, watching TV for a bit is expressed with pooglądać.
Sports and Movement
You can attach po- to verbs of motion and sports to suggest a casual session of exercise rather than a serious workout: biegać (to run) becomes pobiegać, and grać (to play) becomes pograć.
When exploring a city or enjoying the outdoors, you might walk around for a bit (pochodzić) or ride a bike for a while (pojeździć).
Working for a Bit
Although po- is closely associated with relaxation, it can be applied to almost any ongoing activity. Even pracować (to work) becomes popracować (to work for a bit).
