### Counterfactuals: If it weren't for...

To talk about close calls or how a disaster was avoided, use the phrase *gdyby nie* (if it weren't for). 

Surprisingly, even though it contains the negative word *nie*, this phrase is followed directly by the **Nominative** case—the basic dictionary form of the noun and any adjectives attached to it.

To describe the bad outcome that was avoided, the second half of the sentence usually uses a past tense form of *móc* (could) combined with an infinitive verb, like *mógł zginąć* (he could have died) or *mogliśmy stracić* (we could have lost).

### Intervening people and objects

You can use *gdyby nie* to credit physical objects or specific people who intervened. Simply place the noun phrase in the Nominative case (for example, *ten chirurg* or *ten ratownik*).
