The Contemporary Adverbial Participle (-ąc)
In Polish, the contemporary adverbial participle (imiesłów przysłówkowy współczesny) describes an action happening at the exact same time as the main verb. It is the equivalent of saying "while doing" or "by doing" in English.
Crucially, both actions must be performed by the same subject.
To form it, take the "they" form (3rd person plural) of an imperfective verb in the present tense, drop the final -ą, and add -ąc.
- słuchają (they listen) → słuchając (listening)
- buntują się (they rebel) → buntując się (rebelling)
| Listening to music, the boy forgets about his problems. | Słuchając muzyki, chłopak zapomina o problemach. |
Explaining Psychological States
Beyond just meaning "while," this participle is a powerful tool for explaining the psychological reasons behind an action. You will often use verbs like szukać (to seek), czuć (to feel), or chcieć (to want) in this form to explain why someone behaves a certain way.
| Seeking their own identity, teenagers choose various subcultures. | Szukając własnej tożsamości, nastolatki wybierają różne subkultury. |
| Feeling misunderstood, the boy isolates himself, especially since he despises school. | Czując się niezrozumianym, chłopak izoluje się, tym bardziej że gardzi szkołą. |
| Wanting to express themselves, teenagers dye their hair. | Chcąc wyrażać siebie, nastolatki farbują włosy. |
Explaining Circumstances and Methods
You can also use the -ąc participle to explain how a result is achieved (often translating to "by [doing something]").
| By rebelling, young people reject traditional values. | Buntując się, młodzi ludzie odrzucają tradycyjne wartości. |
| By dyeing her hair, the girl creates her image. | Farbując włosy, dziewczyna tworzy swój wizerunek. |
| Belonging to this subculture, they reject pointless rules. | Przynależąc do tej subkultury, odrzucają bezsensowne zasady. |
Negating the Participle
To negate a participle, write nie as a separate word before it, just as you would with a standard verb.
| Not having support, the misunderstood boy isolates himself from his peers. | Nie mając wsparcia, niezrozumiany chłopiec izoluje się od rówieśników. |
