The Prefix przy-: Arriving at a Destination
While the prefix po- means setting off, adding the prefix przy- to a motion verb indicates arriving at a destination.
When we add prefixes to motion verbs, they form aspect pairs. For arriving by vehicle, the perfective verb is przyjechać (for a completed arrival). To talk about arriving habitually, or an arrival currently in progress, use its imperfective counterpart, przyjeżdżać.
| The train arrived at the station on time. | Pociąg przyjechał na stację punktualnie. |
| The guests usually arrive by taxi. | Goście zwykle przyjeżdżają taksówką. |
Arriving on Foot
For arriving on foot, the imperfective verb is przychodzić. Its perfective counterpart is przyjść (to have arrived). Notice how the past tense forms of przyjść (like przyszedłem or przyszła) look a bit different from the infinitive, just like the base verb iść.
| Why do they never arrive on time? | Dlaczego oni nigdy nie przychodzą punktualnie? |
| I usually arrive in the morning, but today I arrived very late. | Zwykle przychodzę rano, ale dzisiaj przyszedłem bardzo późno. |
Arriving by Air
Just like walking and driving, the verb for flying gets the przy- prefix to mean landing or arriving by plane: przylecieć.
| When did you arrive at the airport? | Kiedy przylecieliście na lotnisko? |
| If the flight is okay, I will arrive on time. | Jeśli lot będzie okej, przylecę punktualnie. |
Delays and Welcomes
When talking about travel, things do not always go as planned. Use the perfective reflexive verb spóźnić się when a person is late, and the noun opóźnienie (delay) when referring to a train or flight.
| My brother was late for the train to Krakow. | Mój brat spóźnił się na pociąg do Krakowa. |
| The passengers are waiting because the train is delayed. | Pasażerowie czekają, bo pociąg ma opóźnienie. |
When your passengers or guests finally arrive, you can use the verb przywitać to welcome them.
| We went to the platform to welcome them. | Poszliśmy na peron, żeby ich przywitać. |
