Working a night shift can test your endurance. When you want to complain about how long an exhausting experience lasts, you need to know how to express continuous duration.
The Bare Accusative of Duration
To state that an action continues for a certain period of time—such as "all night" or "a whole hour"—Polish uses the bare accusative case. You do not need any prepositions like "for" or "through"; you simply put the time phrase directly into the accusative.
For feminine time words, the adjective cała (whole) becomes całą. The noun takes its standard accusative ending (-ę for nouns ending in -a like godzina, but no change for consonant-ending feminine nouns like noc).
- cała noc → całą noc (all night)
- cała godzina → całą godzinę (a whole hour)
| I am working all night on the night shift. | Pracuję całą noc na nocnej zmianie. |
| I yawned for a whole hour, because I didn't sleep a wink. | Ziewałem całą godzinę, bo nie zmrużyłem oka. |
Masculine and Neuter Duration
Expressing duration with masculine inanimate nouns (like dzień, czas, or tydzień) and neuter nouns (like popołudnie) is exceptionally easy. Because the accusative form of these nouns is identical to their nominative form, the phrases look exactly like their dictionary forms.
- cały dzień (all day)
- cały czas (all the time)
- całe popołudnie (the whole afternoon)
| My eyelids are heavy and I am constantly yawning all day. | Moje powieki są ciężkie i nieustannie ziewam cały dzień. |
| She must be sick, since she is sleeping the whole afternoon. | Ona musi być chora, skoro śpi całe popołudnie. |
| I drink black coffee all the time to overcome sleepiness. | Piję czarną kawę cały czas, żeby pokonać senność. |
Surviving the Night Shift
When you are barely alert and your eyelids are heavy, pushing through the fatigue requires a lot of effort—and usually a lot of caffeine. Notice how the accusative of duration naturally pairs with complaints about sleepiness (senność):

| I couldn't sleep a wink all night because of this stress. | Nie mogłem zmrużyć oka całą noc przez ten stres. |
