Learn Italian: Oggi finisco l'università. Congratulazioni, dottoressa! - "Today I finish university." "Congratulations, doctor!"

In Italy, anyone who graduates with a university degree is traditionally given the title of dottore (for a man) or dottoressa (for a woman). It does not mean she is a medical doctor or has a PhD!

Why is the verb finisco instead of just "fino"?

The verb finire (to finish) belongs to a special group of verbs ending in -ire. For these verbs, you have to insert -isc- into the word before adding the normal endings for I, you, he/she/it, and they. That is why it becomes io finisco.

Why is there an accent mark on the last letter of l'università?

In Italian, a written accent at the end of a word tells you to put the spoken emphasis on that final vowel. You pronounce it "oo-nee-ver-see-TAH". As a bonus for A1 learners: feminine words ending in an accented vowel like this do not change their spelling in the plural!

Why isn't there an io (I) before finisco?

Italian usually drops the subject pronouns (like io for "I") because the ending of the verb already tells you who is doing the action. The -o at the end of finisco makes it completely clear that "I" am the one finishing.
