Yes/No Questions
In English, we change word order or add helper words like "do" or "are" to ask a question. In Italian, making a yes/no question is much easier: the word order stays exactly the same.
Simply raise your pitch at the end of the sentence (or add a question mark in writing).
| You are Italian. | Sei italiano. |
| Are you Italian? | Sei italiano? |
| The friend is intelligent. | L'amico è intelligente. |
| Is the friend intelligent? | L'amico è intelligente? |
Offering Choices with o
To ask an "either/or" question, use the word o (or). The sentence structure remains the same.
| or | o |
| Is he English or Italian? | Lui è inglese o italiano? |
Asking About Others with anche
To ask if something is also true for someone else, place anche (also, too) directly before the person or thing you are asking about.
| also, too | anche |
| Is the father tall too? | Anche il padre è alto? |
| Is the mother also here? | Anche la madre è qui? |
