"As if" in the Past
To describe an unreal or imagined past scenario, use come se (as if) followed by the pluperfect subjunctive (congiuntivo trapassato).
Form this tense with the imperfect subjunctive of the helper verb (avere or essere) plus the past participle:
| Pronoun | Avere | Essere |
|---|---|---|
| io / tu | avessi | fossi |
| lui / lei | avesse | fosse |
| noi | avessimo | fossimo |
| voi | aveste | foste |
| loro | avessero | fossero |
| He woke up pale, as if he had had a nightmare. | Si è svegliato pallido, come se avesse avuto un incubo. |
| He seemed paralyzed, as if he had seen something to fear. | Sembrava paralizzato, come se avesse visto qualcosa da temere. |
Using Essere
As with other compound tenses, verbs of motion, state, and reflexive verbs take essere as their helper verb. Remember that the past participle must agree in gender and number with the subject.
| He stayed in bed trembling, as if the nightmare had been real. | È rimasto a letto tremante, come se l'incubo fosse stato reale. |
| It took me ten minutes to calm him, as if his heartbeat had stopped. | Ci ho messo dieci minuti per calmarlo, come se il suo battito si fosse fermato. |
Describing Dramatic Reactions
This structure is common when narrating intense or emotional reactions, often paired with adjectives describing extreme states of shock or fear.
| I found her petrified, as if she had heard a distraught voice. | L'ho trovata impietrita, come se avesse sentito una voce sconvolta. |
| I would have helped him, but he was distraught, as if anguish had destroyed him. | Lo avrei aiutato, ma era sconvolto, come se l'angoscia lo avesse distrutto. |
