Masculine singular nouns that use the articles **lo** (starting with **z** or **s** + consonant) and **l'** (starting with a vowel) both use **gli** in the plural.

For nouns starting with **z** or **s** + consonant, **lo** becomes **gli**:

For nouns starting with a vowel, **l'** also becomes **gli**. Unlike the singular **l'**, the plural **gli** does not use an apostrophe and is written as a separate word:
