Roles and life stages (da)

Working "As A" Professional

In Italian, the preposition da has many uses. When you want to talk about working "as a" certain professional or acting in a specific role, you can use da followed immediately by the noun.

Notice that Italian drops the article completely in this construction. While in English you say "as an engineer" or "as a nurse", in Italian you simply say da ingegnere or da infermiere.

My brother worked as an engineer for ten years.
Mio fratello ha lavorato da ingegnere per dieci anni.
As a nurse, you must have a lot of patience.
Da infermiere, devi avere molta pazienza.
As a lawyer, she asked many questions.
Da avvocato, lei faceva molte domande.
She worked as a singer for five years.
Lei ha lavorato da cantante per cinque anni.

Stages of Life

You can use this exact same structure to describe a stage of life. Using da + [noun] translates to "as a child," "as a newborn," or "as a pensioner."

This is a very common and natural way to express "when I was a..." or "when I am a..." in Italian without needing to conjugate a whole new verb clause.

As a little boy, he was always hungry.
Da ragazzino, lui aveva sempre fame.
As a newborn, my son slept all the time.
Da neonato, mio figlio dormiva sempre.
As a pensioner, I will travel a lot more.
Da pensionato, viaggerò molto di più.
