Provided that (basta che)

As Long As: Basta che

To set a strict condition—translating to "as long as" or "provided that"—Italian uses the conversational phrase basta che.

Because it sets up a hypothetical condition rather than a guaranteed fact, basta che must always be followed by a verb in the subjunctive mood.

You can win, provided that you have a strategy.
I am participating in the reality show, as long as the prize money is high.

Reality TV Drama

Reality TV (il reality) is the perfect setting for conditional promises and threats. You can use basta che to negotiate your survival, scheme for the prize money (il montepremi), or set boundaries about what happens in the diary room (il confessionale).

She can manipulate the group, as long as she plays dirty.
You can badmouth me, as long as you don't do it in the diary room.
Televoting saves you, provided that I eliminate Luca.

Alliances and Betrayals

When the stakes are high, housemates might need to forgive a betrayal (il tradimento) or form a strategic alliance (allearsi). Even in the heat of an argument, basta che still strictly requires the subjunctive.

I forgive the betrayal, as long as you don't eliminate me.
People form alliances to win, provided that you agree.
