Pronouns after prepositions
When you want to say "for me", "with you", or "between us", Italian uses a specific set of pronouns after prepositions. These are called tonic pronouns.
Fortunately, most of them are exactly the same as the subject pronouns you already know (lui, lei, noi, voi, loro). Only io and tu change to me and te.
| Subject pronoun | After a preposition |
|---|---|
| io | me |
| tu | te |
| lui / lei | lui / lei |
| noi | noi |
| voi | voi |
| loro | loro |
You will use these pronouns after common prepositions like per (for):
| This package is for me. | Questo pacco è per me. |
| I have a beautiful surprise for you. | Ho una bella sorpresa per te. |
| Marco is buying a gift for her. | Marco compra un regalo per lei. |
"Da" meaning "at someone's place"
When the preposition da (from) is followed by a person or a pronoun, it frequently means "at [person]'s place" or "at [person]'s house".
| Today we are eating at his place. | Oggi mangiamo da lui. |
| Are you sleeping at my place? | Dormi da me? |
Using "senza" (without)
When the preposition senza is followed by a pronoun, Italian requires you to add the word di in between (e.g., senza di me, senza di te).
| They are not leaving without you. | Non partono senza di te. |
| Why are you working without us? | Perché lavori senza di noi? |
"Con" (with) and "tra" (between/among)
Other common prepositions that take these pronouns are con (with) and tra (between, among).
| I do not speak with them. | Non parlo con loro. |
| There is an agreement between us. | C'è un accordo tra noi. |
| It is a secret between you and me. | È un segreto tra me e te. |
