Progressive passive (stare venendo)

The Progressive Passive

To describe an action currently happening to a subject (equivalent to "is being [done]"), Italian uses a progressive passive.

Form it with stare (conjugated) + venendo + a past participle. Because this is a passive construction, the past participle must agree with the subject in gender and number.

Several infrastructures are being expanded.
Parecchie infrastrutture stanno venendo ampliate.
The old avenues are being paved today.
I vecchi viali stanno venendo asfaltati oggi.

Negation and Agents

To make the sentence negative, place non before stare.

The street is not being paved.
La strada non sta venendo asfaltata.

Specify who or what is performing the action with the preposition da (by).

The roadway is being blocked by the crane.
La carreggiata sta venendo bloccata dalla gru.

Notice how the past participle endings change depending on what is being built, dismantled, or redeveloped.

That huge crane is being dismantled.
Quella gru immensa sta venendo smantellata.
A lot of concrete is being used for the new roadway.
Molto cemento sta venendo usato per la nuova carreggiata.
Various squares are being redeveloped.
Varie piazze stanno venendo riqualificate.
