More and More, Less and Less
To describe how something is progressively changing, use sempre più (more and more) and sempre meno (less and less).
While English often repeats adjectives to show growth (like "bigger and bigger" or "faster and faster"), Italian simply places sempre più in front of the standard adjective.
| This trend is more and more widespread. | Questa tendenza è sempre più diffusa. |
| The digital world becomes bigger and bigger. | Il mondo digitale diventa sempre più grande. |
| The connection in the office is faster and faster. | La connessione in ufficio è sempre più veloce. |
Similarly, to describe a decrease, use sempre meno before the adjective.
| The new trends are less and less popular. | Le nuove tendenze sono sempre meno popolari. |
| These old habits are less and less widespread. | Queste vecchie abitudini sono sempre meno diffuse. |
With Nouns and Adverbs
You can also use sempre più and sempre meno directly with nouns (meaning "more and more of..." or "fewer and fewer of...") and adverbs.
| We had less and less time for the cellphone. | Avevamo sempre meno tempo per il cellulare. |
| The consumer makes fewer and fewer purchases in the store. | Il consumatore fa sempre meno acquisti nel negozio. |
