Informal causal conjunction (che)

The Quick "Because"

In a fast-paced environment like a busy kitchen, every second counts. When Italians give urgent instructions, they often skip longer words like perché (because) or poiché (since) and instead use a simple che to instantly justify their commands.

because (informal justification)
che

In spoken, informal Italian, this is often called the che polivalente (multipurpose che). It acts as a casual coordinating conjunction that glues a request or command directly to its urgent reason.

Hurry up and read the order ticket, because the customers are waiting!
Sbrigati a leggere la comanda, che i clienti aspettano!
Get the oil ready, because we have to fry the chicken!
Prepara l'olio, che dobbiamo friggere il pollo!
Hurry up, because we must take the pizza out of the oven.
Sbrigati, che dobbiamo sfornare la pizza.

Explaining On the Fly

This casual che isn't limited to giving orders. You can also use it to rapidly explain your own actions, thoughts, or statements in everyday conversation.

I wanted to chop the onion, because I need it for the soup.
Volevo tritare la cipolla, che mi serve per la zuppa.
I am grating myself this cheese, because I am hungry.
Mi grattugio questo formaggio, che ho fame.

Just remember: while this structure is incredibly common in everyday speech and high-pressure situations, you should stick to perché when writing formal Italian.
