Imperfect for dreams (imperfetto)

The Dream Imperfect (Imperfetto Onirico)

When recounting a dream, you are describing a world where the normal rules of time and physics do not apply. To distance these imaginary events from waking reality, Italians use the imperfetto (imperfect tense).

This specific use is known as the imperfetto onirico (dreamlike imperfect). Because dreams feel like continuous, vivid states rather than completed historical facts, the imperfetto perfectly captures their suspended, surreal atmosphere.

In the dream, everything was surreal and I was very confused.
Nel sogno, tutto era surreale e io ero molto confuso.
It was a lucid dream, a distorted message of the subconscious.
Era un sogno lucido, un messaggio distorto del subconscio.

Narrating Surreal Actions

In waking life, a sequence of completed actions usually takes the passato prossimo. However, inside a dream, even dramatic physical actions are narrated using the imperfetto.

Whether you are floating, bouncing, or falling, using the imperfect keeps the actions feeling fluid, ongoing, and distinctly separate from reality.

I was floating in the room and the atmosphere became more and more surreal.
Fluttuavo nella stanza e l'atmosfera diventava sempre più surreale.
The landscape was distorted and my house was slowly plunging into the abyss.
Il paesaggio era distorto e la mia casa precipitava lentamente nell'abisso.

You will continue to use this tense to describe the entire sequence of your subconscious journey, right up until the moment the dream ends.

My subconscious was confused, so I was about to wake up.
Il mio subconscio era confuso, quindi stavo per svegliarmi.
