When discussing charity, donations, or matching efforts, you often need to express that someone did "likewise" or gave "just as much." In Italian, the word altrettanto handles both concepts. It can act as an adverb or an adjective.
As an Invariable Adverb
When altrettanto modifies a verb to mean "likewise," "the same," or "just as much," it acts as an adverb. Like all adverbs in Italian, it is invariable—its ending never changes.
| The donor contributed to the volunteer work, and we must do likewise. | Il donatore ha contribuito al volontariato, e noi dobbiamo fare altrettanto. |
| You contribute to the initiative, and I donate just as much. | Tu contribuisci all'iniziativa, e io dono altrettanto. |
As a Variable Adjective
When altrettanto modifies a noun to mean "as much" or "as many," it acts as an adjective. It must agree in gender and number with the noun it describes.
It takes one of four forms:
- altrettanto: masculine singular (as much)
- altrettanta: feminine singular (as much)
- altrettanti: masculine plural (as many)
- altrettante: feminine plural (as many)
| Volunteer work helps many people who deserve as much attention. | Il volontariato aiuta molte persone che meritano altrettanta attenzione. |
| We found ten donors who donate a lot, and we are looking for as many volunteers. | Abbiamo trovato dieci donatori che donano molto, e cerchiamo altrettanti volontari. |
| They distributed the food evenly, and we fed as many people. | Loro hanno distribuito il cibo equamente, e noi abbiamo sfamato altrettante persone. |
