Exclusive actions (non fare altro che)

Doing Nothing But...

When someone is fixated on a single activity or simply won't stop doing one thing, use the phrase non fare altro che ("to do nothing but [action]").

The syntax is straightforward:

  • non
    • conjugated fare
      • altro che
        • infinitive

Only the verb fare changes to match the subject.

She does nothing but grumble.
Lei non fa altro che brontolare.
Those two do nothing but bicker.
Quei due non fanno altro che bisticciare.

Fixations and Bad Habits

This construction is especially common when complaining about bad habits or unproductive behaviors.

My colleague does nothing but huff.
Il mio collega non fa altro che sbuffare.
You've done nothing but whine since yesterday.
Da ieri non fai altro che piagnucolare.

Whether someone is fixated on the past, refusing to get off the couch, or lost in their thoughts, non fare altro che perfectly captures that exclusive focus.

He does nothing but brood over that injustice.
Non fa altro che rimuginare su quell'ingiustizia.
My brother does nothing but laze about on the sofa.
Mio fratello non fa altro che poltrire sul divano.
