When expressing a concession ("even if" or "even though") where both parts of the sentence share the same subject, Italian uses a concise shortcut: anche + present gerund.
Place anche directly in front of a present gerund (verbs ending in -ando or -endo).
| Even fasting, I do not lose weight. | Anche digiunando, non dimagrisco. |
| Even following a strict diet, I cannot escape the temptation. | Anche seguendo una dieta rigida, non posso sfuggire alla tentazione. |
| Even fasting often, Marco gains weight anyway. | Anche digiunando spesso, Marco ingrassa comunque. |
You can also use the gerund of essere (essendo) followed by an adjective to express "even being...".
| Even being a glutton, I don't feel up to eating another bite. | Anche essendo goloso, non me la sento di mangiare un altro boccone. |
Placement
While the anche clause often starts the sentence to establish context, it can easily follow the main clause instead.
| That irresistible temptation, I avoid it even by closing my eyes. | Quella tentazione irresistibile la evito, anche chiudendo gli occhi. |
