Adverbs from -le and -re adjectives (-mente)

To form an adverb in Italian, you typically add the suffix -mente to an adjective (similar to "-ly" in English). For adjectives ending in -le and -re, you must drop the final -e before adding the suffix.

You can use adverbs like incredibilmente (incredibly) and terribilmente (terribly) to evaluate a performance or to amplify another description.

The new colleague works incredibly well.
Il nuovo collega lavora incredibilmente bene.
I am not going, as I am terribly tired.
Non vado, che sono terribilmente stanco.

Framing Your Perspective

These adverbs are also highly useful at the beginning of a statement for framing your perspective, setting expectations, or stating an official stance.

Of course, the candidate presented the project well.
Naturalmente, il candidato ha presentato bene il progetto.
Personally, I consider the candidate suitable.
Personalmente, ritengo il candidato adatto.
The project officially begins tomorrow.
Il progetto inizia ufficialmente domani.
