Questions & Answers about Mundu endilega að fylla út eyðublaðið.
Why does this sentence use "Mundu" instead of "Gætirðu" if this is a lesson about polite requests?
Mundu is the command form of muna (to remember) merged with þú (you). While you can use the subjunctive Gætirðu (Could you) for polite requests, using a direct command and softening it with endilega is another extremely common way to make a polite request in Icelandic.
What does "endilega" mean literally, and how does it act as "please"?
Icelandic does not have a single exact equivalent for the English word "please". The adverb endilega literally means "by all means" or "absolutely". When paired with a command, it softens the tone from a strict order to a friendly, encouraging request.
Is "út" in "fylla út" the exact same as "out" in "fill out"?
Yes! Fylla út is a phrasal verb meaning "to fill out", operating just like its English counterpart. The word út means "out". You use the infinitive marker að before the verb, making the full phrase að fylla út (to fill out).
How does the word "eyðublaðið" break down?
It is a compound of eyða (a blank space) and blað (a sheet of paper), so it literally means a "blank sheet" or "form". The -ið suffix is the attached definite article meaning "the". It takes the accusative case here because it is the direct object receiving the action of being filled out.
