Questions & Answers about Áhrifavaldurinn notar alltaf rásina.
Why does alltaf come after the verb notar instead of before it like in English?
In Icelandic main clauses, adverbs of frequency like alltaf (always) usually come directly after the conjugated verb. This means that instead of saying 'The influencer always uses', Icelandic says 'The influencer uses always' (Áhrifavaldurinn notar alltaf).
Áhrifavaldurinn is a very long word! What are its parts?
It is a compound word created for the modern age. It combines áhrif (influence or effect) and valdur (someone who causes or wields something). With the masculine 'the' ending (-inn) attached, it literally means 'the influence-wielder', which is how Icelandic says 'the influencer'.
Why is the word for channel spelled rásina here instead of rásin?
Rásin is the base (nominative) form for 'the channel'. In this sentence, the channel is the direct object being used, so the verb nota (to use) forces it into the accusative case. For a feminine noun like rás, the attached article changes from -in to -ina, giving us rásina.
Could I move alltaf to the beginning of the sentence to emphasize it?
Yes, you can start with alltaf for emphasis. But remember that Icelandic uses the V2 rule, meaning the verb must stay in the second position. If you start with the adverb, the verb and subject must swap places: Alltaf notar áhrifavaldurinn rásina (Always uses the influencer the channel).
