Questions & Answers about Áætlunin er mjög slæm í dag.
Why is there no separate word for 'the' before 'schedule'?
In Icelandic, the definite article (the word for 'the') is attached to the end of the noun rather than standing alone. The base noun is áætlun (schedule or plan). Adding the feminine suffix -in gives us áætlunin (the schedule).
Why is the word for bad written as slæm here instead of slæmur?
Adjectives in Icelandic change their endings to match the gender of the noun they describe. Because áætlun is a feminine noun, the adjective takes its feminine singular form, slæm. If we were describing a masculine noun like a day (dagur), it would be slæmur.
Why does it say í dag instead of using a single word for 'today'?
Icelandic doesn't have a single compound word for 'today.' Instead, it uses the two-word phrase í dag, which literally means 'in day' or 'into the day.' You will see this exact same pattern used for other parts of the day, such as í kvöld for 'tonight.'
Since this lesson is about time and schedules, does áætlun specifically mean a transport timetable?
It often does! Áætlun is a versatile word that translates to plan, schedule, or itinerary. If you are waiting for a bus or a flight and discussing when it arrives, the áætlun is the public transport timetable you are relying on.
