Questions & Answers about Hvað er klukkan núna?
Is this literally asking "What is the clock?"
Exactly! Instead of asking what time it is, Icelanders literally ask "What is the clock?" The word klukka means clock, and the -n at the end is the attached word for "the" making it klukkan (the clock).
How do I answer this question to say "It is..."?
Just like the question, your answer will start with Klukkan er... (The clock is...). For example, to say "It is three o'clock," you say Klukkan er þrjú.
Since we are learning fractions like hálf (half), how would I answer if it is 3:30?
You would say Klukkan er hálf fjögur. Notice that Icelandic looks ahead to the next hour! So 3:30 is literally "the clock is half four."
What is the difference between nú and núna?
Both mean "now," but núna emphasizes right now at this exact second. When asking for the time, núna is very commonly added to the end of the question, though Hvað er klukkan? works perfectly well without it.
