Questions & Answers about Við fáum svarið bráðum.
The lesson is about vowel changes in strong verbs. Why doesn't fáum have a changed vowel?
The verb is að fá (to get). Strong verbs change their stem vowel in the singular, but they keep their original dictionary vowel in the plural. Because við (we) is plural, fáum keeps the á. If it were singular, the á would change to æ, like in ég fæ (I get).
Why is the word for "the answer" written as one word, svarið?
In Icelandic, the word for "the" (the definite article) attaches to the end of the noun instead of coming before it as a separate word. The base word is svar (answer), which is a neuter noun. Adding the neuter ending -ið gives us svarið (the answer).
The word bráðum ends in -um just like the verb fáum. Are they grammatically related here?
Not at all! While -um is the standard ending for "we" verbs (like við fáum), bráðum is simply a fixed adverb meaning "soon." It is just a coincidence that it ends with those same letters in this sentence.
Can this sentence also translate to "We will get the answer soon"?
Yes! Icelandic doesn't have a dedicated future tense like English does with the word "will." Instead, you usually just use a present tense verb like fáum along with a time word like bráðum (soon) to talk about the future.
