Questions & Answers about Valdstjórnin ætlar að rúa manninn ærunni.
With verbs like gefa (to give), the person is in the Dative and the thing is in the Accusative. Why is it reversed here, with manninn in the Accusative and ærunni in the Dative?
This is the core rule for many verbs of deprivation (taking something away). Instead of giving a gift, you are directly targeting the person (making them the direct object in the Accusative) to remove something they possess or hold (which goes into the Dative). The verb rúa perfectly follows this 'Accusative person + Dative thing' pattern.
Does rúa mean 'to strip' in the sense of taking off clothes?
No, you wouldn't use it for taking off a jacket. Rúa traditionally means to shear a sheep or pluck its wool. Metaphorically, as it is used here, it means to mercilessly fleece, rob, or strip someone of an intangible possession like their honor or dignity.
Why does the Icelandic sentence say ærunni (the honor) instead of using a possessive word for 'his' honor?
Icelandic frequently uses the definite article rather than a possessive pronoun when referring to body parts or inherent personal qualities like honor (æra). Because the man (manninn) is already the clear target in the sentence, adding a word for 'his' is unnecessary and would sound unnatural.
What is the breakdown of the word Valdstjórnin?
It is a compound of vald (power or authority) and stjórn (government, board, or control), plus the definite article -in (the). It is commonly used to describe the ruling authorities, the state power, or a regime.
