Questions & Answers about Húfan hennar er grá.
Why does the sentence use húfan (the beanie) instead of just húfa (beanie)?
In Icelandic, when you indicate possession using words like hennar (her) or hans (his), the noun usually takes the definite article (the 'the' ending). So, you are literally saying 'the beanie of her'.
Why does hennar come after the noun?
In Icelandic, the standard position for a possessive pronoun is right after the noun. You can put it before the noun for strong emphasis, like saying 'hennar húfa' to mean 'her beanie', but in that case, the noun drops the 'the' ending.
Why is the adjective grá and not grár?
Adjectives must match the noun they describe in gender. Since húfa is a feminine noun, the adjective takes the feminine singular form grá, rather than the masculine grár or neuter grátt.
Does hennar change its ending to match the feminine noun húfan?
No, hennar doesn't change here. It is the possessive form of hún (she). Since it simply means 'of her', it stays exactly the same regardless of whether the owned object is masculine, feminine, or neuter.
