When discussing personal finances, use mikið af (much / a lot of) and lítið af (little / a small amount of) with uncountable nouns.
Because the preposition af governs the dative case, any noun following it must be in its dative form.
Singular Nouns
For most masculine and neuter nouns, the dative ending is -i. For example, sparnaður (savings) becomes sparnaði and fjármagn (capital) becomes fjármagni.
| They have a lot of savings in the bank. | Þau eru með mikið af sparnaði í bankanum. |
| We start with little capital. | Við byrjum með lítið af fjármagni. |
Feminine nouns ending in -a, like eyðsla (spending), change to -u in the dative (eyðslu).
| There is a lot of spending over the weekend. | Það er mikið af eyðslu um helgina. |
Plural Nouns
Several financial terms are used in the plural, such as tekjur (income), laun (salary), and skuldir (debts). In the dative plural, all Icelandic nouns take the -um ending.
| The hotel has a lot of income. | Hótelið hefur mikið af tekjum. |
| He gets a lot of salary today. | Hann fær mikið af launum í dag. |
| They have little debts. | Þau eru með lítið af skuldum. |
