The twelve months of the year in Icelandic look and sound very familiar to English speakers. One important rule to remember is that months are written in lowercase letters unless they appear at the beginning of a sentence.
The First Half of the Year
When used as the subject of a sentence, months take their standard form.
| January is the first month. | Janúar er fyrsti mánuðurinn. |
To say that something happens "in" a certain month, use the preposition í.
| We were in Iceland in January and February. | Við vorum á Íslandi í janúar og febrúar. |
| The spring begins in March or April. | Vorið byrjar í mars eða apríl. |
| The school is closed in May and June. | Skólinn er lokaður í maí og júní. |
The Second Half of the Year
The pattern continues for the rest of the year. Months from September to December are spelled exactly as in English, though their pronunciation follows Icelandic rules.
| The sun shines a lot in July and August. | Sólin skín mikið í júlí og ágúst. |
| The autumn is beautiful in September and October. | Haustið er fallegt í september og október. |
| Does it rain a lot in Iceland in October and November? | Rignir mikið á Íslandi í október og nóvember? |
| The winter is very dark in December. | Veturinn er mjög dimmur í desember. |
