Asia and Australia
Let's wrap up our global tour with the remaining continents, starting with Asía (Asia) and Ástralía (Australia). Both are weak feminine nouns, ending in -a in their basic form. After prepositions like til (to), frá (from), um (about), or í (in), this ending changes to -u.
| Asia is the largest continent. | Asía er stærsta heimsálfan. |
| Aren't you learning about Asia? Yes, I am reading the book. | Ert þú ekki að læra um Asíu? Jú, ég er að lesa bókina. |
| Are they traveling to Australia today? | Eru þær að ferðast til Ástralíu í dag? |
The Americas
Suður-Ameríka (South America) and Norður-Ameríka (North America) attach the compass directions suður (south) and norður (north) as prefixes. Because the core word is Ameríka, they behave just like Asía and Ástralía, ending in -u after a preposition.
| He has lived for a long time in South America. | Hann hefur búið lengi í Suður-Ameríku. |
| We are flying to North America. | Við erum að fljúga til Norður-Ameríku. |
Antarctica
Suðurskautslandið (Antarctica) translates literally to "the South Pole Land," built from suður (south), skaut (pole), and land (land). It typically carries the definite article -ið at the end. When talking about being in Antarctica, we use the preposition á (on) rather than í.
| Usually it is very cold in Antarctica. | Venjulega er mjög kalt á Suðurskautslandinu. |
| Tomorrow we intend to read about Antarctica. | Á morgun ætlum við að lesa um Suðurskautslandið. |
