Mér er illt í — saying where it hurts

The pattern you already have

Mér er heitt. Mér er kalt. The person is in the dative and there is no ég. Pain works the same way, with illt and the preposition í:

Mér er illt í + the body part in the dative.

My stomach hurts.
Mér er illt í maganum.

This is the sentence you say to a doctor, so it is worth drilling until it is automatic. The body part takes the dative because it follows í with no motion.

mér er illt í höfðinumy head hurts
mér er illt í maganummy stomach hurts
mér er illt í hálsinummy throat hurts
mér er illt í bakinumy back hurts

New parts of the body

hálsinnthe neck, the throat
munnurinnthe mouth
maginnthe stomach
nefiðthe nose
hnéðthe knee
fingurinnthe finger

Where you go for it

apótekið is the pharmacy — where the lyf and the pillur you already know come from.

I buy the medicine at the pharmacy.
Ég kaupi lyfið í apótekinu.
