Planning a trip involves a lot of choices. To link paired options together—like saying you want "both this and that" or "either this or that"—Icelandic uses correlative conjunctions.
Either... or (Annaðhvort... eða)
To present two alternatives, use annaðhvort... eða. Place the first option immediately after annaðhvort and the second after eða.
| We need to buy either the flight ticket or the food. | Við þurfum að kaupa annaðhvort flugmiðann eða matinn. |
| The tourist needs to confirm either the flight ticket or the accommodation. | Ferðamaðurinn þarf að staðfesta annaðhvort flugmiðann eða gistinguna. |
Both... and (Bæði... og)
When you want to include both options, use bæði... og. Just like in English, this pair frames the two things you are talking about.
| I was confirming both the accommodation and the travel itinerary. | Ég var að staðfesta bæði gistinguna og ferðaáætlunina. |
| We are going to rent both the rental car and the bicycle. | Við ætlum að leigja bæði bílaleigubílinn og hjólið. |
Linking adjectives
These conjunction pairs aren't limited to linking nouns. You can also use them to link adjectives when describing something, such as the conditions of your travel insurance (tryggingin).
| The insurance is either flexible or cheap. | Tryggingin er annaðhvort sveigjanleg eða ódýr. |
| The insurance is both flexible and cheap. | Tryggingin er bæði sveigjanleg og ódýr. |
