Dropping 'ef': The V1 Conditional
In Icelandic, the standard way to say "if" is by using the word ef followed by normal word order (subject + verb).
However, in formal contexts like official rules, event regulations, and etiquette guidelines, Icelandic often drops the word ef entirely. When this happens, the verb moves to the very first position in the sentence. This is known as "Conditional V1" (Verb-First) word order. It is equivalent to English phrasing like "Should the phone not be silent..."
It is very common to use the subjunctive mood in these structures to emphasize the hypothetical nature of the rule. For example, the subjunctive form of vera (to be) for a third-person singular subject is sé.
| If the phone is not silent, it creates a disturbance. | Sé síminn ekki hljóðlaus, skapar það ónæði. |
| If the attire is inappropriate, you will be directed out. | Sé klæðnaðurinn óviðeigandi, verður þér vísað út. |
Applying V1 to Other Verbs
This structure applies to all verbs, not just vera. For example, the verb hafa (to have) becomes hafir in the second-person singular subjunctive. You can also chain multiple V1 conditional clauses together using og (and).
| If you have the admission ticket and the attire is appropriate, you may go in. | Hafir þú aðgöngumiðann og sé klæðnaðurinn viðeigandi, mátt þú fara inn. |
Other active verbs follow the exact same pattern. The verb trufla (to disturb) takes the subjunctive form truflir (should you disturb).
| If you disturb the guests, it is highly inappropriate. | Truflir þú gestina, er það mjög óviðeigandi. |
Using the Indicative in V1 Conditionals
While the subjunctive is a hallmark of highly formal V1 rules, you will also see regular present tense (indicative) verbs used in this exact structure.
The word order alone—putting the verb first—is enough to clearly signal that it is an "if" statement. In the following examples, týnir (lose) and byrjar (begins) are regular indicative verbs taking on a conditional meaning purely because they start the sentence.
| If you lose the admission ticket, you cannot fetch the jacket from the cloakroom. | Týnir þú aðgöngumiðanum, getur þú ekki sótt jakkann í fatahengið. |
| If the disturbance begins, we do not sell the alcohol. | Byrjar ónæðið, seljum við ekki áfengið. |
