Why is the verb поправив used here instead of the imperfective поправляв?
поправив is the perfective past tense form of поправляти. In Ukrainian, perfective verbs describe one-time, completed actions. The imperfective поправляв would imply a repeated or ongoing action (“I was adjusting my hat”). Since you’ve adjusted your hat once (and finished doing it), you use поправив.
Why is there no possessive pronoun before шапку (for example, мою шапку)?
In Ukrainian, you can often omit possessive pronouns (мій, твій etc.) when context makes ownership clear. Here the subject is я, so it’s obvious the hat belongs to you. Adding мою is grammatically correct (Я поправив мою шапку…) but redundant.
