What does щовечора mean and what part of speech is it?
Щовечора is an adverb of time meaning every evening. It’s formed by the prefix що- (each/every) plus the noun вечір (evening) in its Genitive singular, fused into a single word to express a habitual time frame.
Why is читаю in the present tense if the action is habitual rather than happening this instant?
In Ukrainian, the present tense of an Imperfective verb like читати covers both ongoing actions and regular or habitual actions. So читаю can mean I am reading now or I read regularly (e.g. every evening), depending on context.
What aspect is used with читати here, and how does it differ from a perfective form?
Here читати is Imperfective, which emphasizes the process or repetition of reading. The corresponding perfective form is прочитати, which focuses on completing the action (e.g. I will finish reading the book). To say “I have read the book” in Ukrainian you’d use я прочитав книгу (masculine) or я прочитала книгу (feminine).
Why is the word книгу in the Accusative case?
Книгу is the direct object of the transitive verb читаю. Inanimate feminine nouns that end in -а in the Nominative (here книга) take -у in the Accusative (книгу). Ukrainian has no articles, so you simply use the noun in its proper case to show it’s the thing being read.
Do I have to include я before читаю, or can it be dropped?
You can drop я because the verb ending -ю already marks first person singular. Saying Щовечора читаю книгу is perfectly grammatical. Including я adds emphasis or clarity, but it isn’t required.
Is the word order fixed in Щовечора я читаю книгу, or can I rearrange it?
