Questions & Answers about Я думаю про новий проєкт.
What is the literal translation of Я думаю про новий проєкт?
It literally means I think about the new project. In natural English you might also say I am thinking about the new project, since Ukrainian does not distinguish simple from continuous present.
How do I pronounce Я думаю про новий проєкт and where are the stresses?
Pronunciation guide (IPA approximate): /ja duˈmaju pro ˈnɔwɪj proˈjekt/.
- думаю is stressed on ма: du-MA-yu
- новий is stressed on но: NO-vyj
- проєкт is stressed on єкт: pro-YEKT
Remember Ukrainian г is a voiced fricative [ɦ] (like “h” but voiced), and є = [je] (so “про-єкт” sounds like “pro-yekt”).
Why is the preposition про used here and what case does it govern?
- про is the standard Ukrainian preposition for “about” or “concerning.”
- It requires the accusative case.
So про новий проєкт uses новий проєкт in the accusative. For inanimate masculine nouns like проєкт, accusative form is identical to nominative.
Why is the adjective новий not нового?
Because про takes the accusative, and masculine inanimate adjectives in the accusative look the same as in the nominative.
If it were an animate masculine noun, or a feminine noun, the ending would change (e.g., про нову ідею in feminine accusative).
What’s the difference between думати про and думати над?
- думати про = to think about (have in mind, consider)
- думати над = to work on, to ponder deeply or to brainstorm
Using над implies you’re actively developing or solving something, whereas про is more general consideration.
Why is думати imperfective here, and how would a perfective form change the meaning?
- думати is imperfective, indicating ongoing or habitual thought.
- Perfective is подумати (I will think / I thought through once).
So Я подумав про новий проєкт means I thought about the new project (completed action), while Я думаю про новий проєкт means you’re thinking now or repeatedly.
Can I drop the pronoun Я and just say Думаю про новий проєкт?
Yes. In Ukrainian, personal endings on verbs make the subject clear. Omitting Я is common in informal speech and messages: Думаю про новий проєкт still means I’m thinking about the new project.
Why is project spelled проєкт with the extra є, not like Russian проект?
Modern Ukrainian orthography restores є after prefixes to reflect pronunciation: про-єкт = pro-yekt. The є signals a separate syllable [je], so you don’t merge it into о.
