Questions & Answers about Güvenilir kaynak önemlidir.
Why is there no “a” or “the” before güvenilir kaynak?
Turkish has no articles. A noun phrase without plural marking can be understood as “a/an” or as a generic concept. So güvenilir kaynak can mean “a reliable source” or simply “reliable source” in general.
Why is kaynak singular and not kaynaklar?
In Turkish, the singular is often used for general truths or categories. Güvenilir kaynak önemlidir states a general principle: “A reliable source is important.” If you want to emphasize multiple sources, you can say Güvenilir kaynaklar önemlidir (“Reliable sources are important”).
What is the suffix -dir doing in önemlidir?
-dir is the formal copula suffix marking a factual or declarative statement. Önemli is the adjective “important,” and adding -dir makes it “it is important.” This suffix is common in written or formal speech.
Can I drop -dir and just say Güvenilir kaynak önemli?
Yes. Omitting -dir is perfectly acceptable in everyday, colloquial Turkish. It becomes less formal but still means “A reliable source is important.”
Why -dir and not one of the other copula forms like -dır or -tur?
Turkish vowel harmony dictates which copula form to use. Adjectives ending in a front unrounded vowel (like i in önemli) take -dir. If the last vowel were back (a, ı, o, u), you’d use -dır, -dur, or -dır accordingly.
How is güvenilir formed and what does it literally mean?
Güvenilir derives from the verb güvenmek (“to trust”) plus the passive/adjectival suffix -il (making it “to be trusted”) and the present tense/adjective-forming suffix -ir. Literally it means “that can be trusted,” i.e. “trustworthy” or “reliable.”
Why does the adjective güvenilir come before the noun kaynak?
In Turkish, adjectives always precede the nouns they modify. So you say güvenilir kaynak (adjective + noun), never kaynak güvenilir.
Where is the word stress in Güvenilir kaynak önemlidir?
Turkish words are typically stressed on the last syllable. So you’d stress güveniLIR, kaNAK, and önemLİdir (with the main sentence stress on önemlidir).
