Questions & Answers about Спасибо за совет.
Which case is совет here and why?
Accusative, because with the “thanking for” meaning, Russian uses за + Accusative. Совет is an inanimate masculine noun, so its Accusative singular looks like the Nominative: за совет. With adjectives: за хороший/ценный совет. Plural: за советы.
Why за, not для or о?
Because за marks the cause/thing you are thanking for. Для means “intended for/for the benefit of” (e.g., подарок для тебя), and о means “about” (e.g., говорить о сове́те) and is not used with спасибо. So say спасибо за совет, not спасибо для/о совета.
Is “advice” countable in Russian?
Yes. Совет is countable. One piece: совет; several: советы. So you can say спасибо за совет (one) or спасибо за советы (more than one). A friendly diminutive is советик.
How do I point the thanks at someone?
