Questions & Answers about Откуда пришёл гость?
What does Откуда mean and how is it different from Где?
Откуда is an interrogative adverb meaning from where (asking about origin or starting point). Где means where (asking about location at which something is). For example:
- Откуда пришёл гость? → “From where did the guest come?”
- Где сейчас гость? → “Where is the guest now?”
What case does Откуда imply?
Although откуда stands alone, it is built on the preposition от, which governs the genitive case. You don’t add another preposition after откуда—you simply use the verb. Conceptually, it’s like от + куда, hence the sense of “from where.”
Why is пришёл in the masculine singular past tense?
In Russian, past-tense verbs agree with the gender and number of their subject. Here, гость is a masculine singular noun, so the verb is in the masculine singular past form: пришёл.
How would you change the sentence if the guest were female or if there were multiple guests?
- Feminine guest: Откуда пришла гостья? (verb changes to пришла)
- Plural guests: Откуда пришли гости? (verb changes to )
