Questions & Answers about Ana doarme acum.
Why doesn’t Romanian use an auxiliary verb like is to express the present continuous?
Romanian doesn’t distinguish between simple and continuous aspect with a special auxiliary. The simple present tense covers both. So doarme can mean both “sleeps” and “is sleeping.”
How is the verb dormi conjugated in the present tense for the third person singular?
The present‐tense paradigm of dormi (to sleep) is:
• eu dorm
• tu dormi
• el/ea doarme
• noi dormim
• voi dormiți
• ei/ele dorm
Here doarme corresponds to “he/she/it sleeps” (or “is sleeping”).
What is the meaning of acum, and where can it be placed in the sentence?
Acum means “now.” Word order in Romanian is relatively flexible:
• Neutral: Subject–Verb–Adverb → Ana doarme acum
• Emphasis on time: Adverb–Subject–Verb → Acum Ana doarme
• Slight variation: Subject–Adverb–Verb → Ana acum doarme
All three mean “Ana is sleeping now,” but fronting acum highlights the timing.
Can I form a question by simply saying Doarme Ana acum?
Yes. Yes–no questions in Romanian often keep the same word order and use rising intonation. Doarme Ana acum? means “Is Ana sleeping now?” You don’t need an extra auxiliary like “does.”
Is it mandatory to use the subject Ana, or can it be dropped?
Romanian is a pro-drop language, so subject pronouns can be omitted when context makes the subject clear. However, you normally don’t drop proper names. You could say (Ea) doarme acum if you’ve already mentioned that ea refers to Ana, but omitting Ana entirely would leave the sentence unclear.
How is doarme pronounced?
The stress is on the first syllable: DOAr-me. In IPA it’s [ˈdo̯ar.me], where oa sounds like the vowel in “wall” (without the final l) and r is a tapped r (like a quick r in Spanish).
