Why is it znam, not wiem?
Polish splits English “to know” into different verbs:
- znać = to be acquainted/familiar with a person, place, thing or word. Example: Znam to miejsce.
- wiedzieć = to know a fact, something you can put into a clause. Example: Wiem, gdzie to jest.
- umieć/potrafić = to know how/be able to. Examples: Umiem pływać. Potrafię to zrobić.
You can’t say Wiem to miejsce; that’s ungrammatical. Use Znam with nouns like “place.”
What case is to miejsce in, and why doesn’t miejsce change?
It’s the accusative case as the direct object of znać. Neuter nouns have the same form in nominative and accusative, so miejsce stays miejsce. The demonstrative to here is the accusative neuter singular of ten.
Why is it to and not ten/ta/te?
Because miejsce is neuter singular. The basic demonstratives are:
- ten (masculine singular)
- ta (feminine singular)
- to (neuter singular)
- ci (masculine-personal plural)
- te (all other plurals)
So you need to miejsce. Note: te is plural, and tę is feminine singular accusative (colloquial: tą), neither applies here.
