Questions & Answers about Wyspa jest piękna.
Why is there no word for the or a in Wyspa jest piękna?
Polish does not have definite or indefinite articles like the or a/an. Context or additional words (e.g. jakaś wyspa “some island”) tell you whether it’s specific or not.
What case is wyspa in, and why?
Wyspa is in the nominative singular. In a simple sentence with a subject and a predicate adjective, the subject stays in nominative.
Why does piękna end with -a instead of another ending?
Because piękna is an adjective agreeing in gender, number, and case with wyspa:
- wyspa is feminine singular nominative
- feminine adjectives in that form take -a
Hence piękna.
Why is the verb jest necessary here? In some Slavic languages you can drop “to be” in the present tense.
In Polish, the present tense of być (“to be”) must appear as jest. You cannot omit it. Omitting jest would be ungrammatical in Wyspa jest piękna.
Why is in the nominative, not the instrumental (e.g. )?
