Questions & Answers about Klassen begynner om morgenen.
What does klassen mean and why does it have the -en ending?
klassen is the definite singular form of klasse (class). In Norwegian, you add -en to a masculine noun (or -a to a feminine noun) to make it definite. Thus klasse = “a class,” and klassen = “the class.”
How is the verb begynner formed, and why isn’t it begynneres or something else?
begynner is the present tense of å begynne (to begin/to start). Norwegian verbs do not change form according to person: jeg begynner, du begynner, han begynner all look the same in the present tense.
Why is the time expression om morgenen used instead of i morgen?
om morgenen means “in the morning” in a general or habitual sense. i morgen means “tomorrow.” If you want “tomorrow morning,” you’d say i morgen tidlig.
Could I say på morgenen instead of om morgenen?
The standard way to talk about parts of the day in general is om morgenen, om ettermiddagen, om kvelden. You might hear på formiddagen or på ettermiddagen, but with morgen it’s almost always om morgenen.
Why isn’t there an article before morgenen, like om den morgenen?
When you use om + a time of day, you pair it directly with the definite form of the noun. morgenen is already “the morning,” so you don’t add den.
Is the word order always Subject–Verb–Time in Norwegian?
Norwegian main clauses follow the V2 rule: the finite verb must be in second position. You can put the subject first (Klassen begynner om morgenen) or the time phrase first (Om morgenen begynner klassen), but the verb stays second.
Can I replace begynner with starter?
Yes. å starte is a close synonym of å begynne. So Klassen starter om morgenen works just as well.
How would I say “The class starts at eight in the morning”?
You can say Klassen begynner klokka åtte om morgenen (or abbreviated Kl. 08.00 om morgenen).
