Questions & Answers about Rom er stort.
What does the sentence Rom er stort mean?
It means “Room is big.” In this predicative sentence, rom (room) is the subject, er is the linking verb (meaning “is”), and stort is the adjective describing the room.
Why is there no article before rom, unlike in English where we say “the room” or “a room”?
In Norwegian, a bare noun like rom can be used to make a general or indefinite statement. The use of an article or a definite form (such as rommet) depends on context. Here, the sentence treats “room” in a generic or non-specific way.
Why is the adjective written as stort instead of stor?
The form stort is used because rom is a neuter noun. When adjectives agree with a neuter noun in the attributive position (as in et stort rom), they take the ending -t. In predicative constructions like Rom er stort, adjectives typically appear in the same form—the uninflected, neuter form.
What is the role of the word er in the sentence?
Er is the present tense form of the verb å være (to be). It acts as a linking verb that connects the subject (rom) with its predicate adjective (stort).
