Why is ini placed after brek instead of before it?
In Malay, demonstratives like ini (this) and itu (that) usually come after the noun.
So:
- brek ini = this brake
- kereta itu = that car
- rumah ini = this house
This is one of the first word-order differences English speakers notice, because English puts this/that before the noun, while Malay usually puts them after.
Why is there no word for is in Brek ini kuat?
Malay often leaves out the verb to be when linking a subject to an adjective.
So:
- Brek ini kuat literally looks like brake this strong
- but naturally means This brake is strong
This is completely normal Malay. The same pattern appears in many simple sentences:
- Kereta itu besar = That car is big
- Budak itu kecil = That child is small
- Rumah ini cantik = This house is beautiful
You do not need a word equivalent to is here.
