Questions & Answers about babi masisseoyo.
What does 밥이 맛있어요 literally mean and how would I translate it?
Literally, 밥 means “rice” (or by extension “meal”), 이 is the subject marker, and 맛있어요 means “is delicious” in polite speech. So you can translate it as, “The rice (or meal) is delicious,” often simply “The food is tasty.”
Why do we put 이 after 밥? Can’t I just say 밥 맛있어요?
이 is the subject particle that marks 밥 as the thing performing the action or state (being delicious). In casual spoken Korean people sometimes drop subject particles, so 밥 맛있어요 can be heard, but in standard polite speech you include 이 for clarity.
Could I use 는 instead of 이, as in 밥은 맛있어요? What difference does that make?
Yes. 은 is the topic particle, so 밥은 맛있어요 means “As for the rice (or meal), it is delicious” and may imply contrast or set a topic. 밥이 맛있어요 simply states a new or neutral fact about the rice being delicious.
Is 맛있어요 a verb or an adjective?
In Korean grammar it’s called a descriptive verb (서술적 용언). Functionally it behaves like an adjective in English, describing a noun, but it conjugates like a verb (you can change its ending: 맛있다, 맛있어, 맛있습니다).
