Why does bezonas end in -as?
In Esperanto, -as marks the present tense. So bezonas means need / needs / am needing / are needing in the present.
A useful thing for English speakers: the verb form does not change with the subject.
- mi bezonas = I need
- vi bezonas = you need
- li bezonas = he needs
- ni bezonas = we need
So bezonas stays the same no matter who is doing the needing.
Why is ŝraŭbojn so long? What do all those endings mean?
ŝraŭbojn can be broken down like this:
- ŝraŭb- = the root, related to screw
- -o = noun ending
- -j = plural
- -n = accusative, marking the direct object
So:
- ŝraŭbo = a screw
- ŝraŭboj = screws
- ŝraŭbojn = screws, as the thing being needed
This is a very typical Esperanto pattern.
