Why does ŝraŭbturnilon end in -n?
Because it is the direct object of prenis. In Esperanto, the direct object usually takes the accusative ending -n.
- base form: ŝraŭbturnilo
- as the thing she took: ŝraŭbturnilon
So the -n tells you that this is the thing being taken.
Why doesn’t ŝraŭbo also have an -n?
Because ŝraŭbo is part of the prepositional phrase por la ŝraŭbo. After a normal preposition like por, the noun does not usually take the accusative -n.
So:
- ŝraŭbturnilon = direct object of the verb
- por la ŝraŭbo = prepositional phrase, not a direct object
What does por mean here?
Here por means for, in the sense of intended for, meant for, or to use with.
So por la ŝraŭbo means something like:
